How to Apply for the OffChart NXT Startup Challenge 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're building a startup anywhere in Africa and have something real to show for it — customers, revenue, users, a signed contract, a working pilot — the OffChart NXT Startup Challenge is worth your attention. It's the flagship founder programme running ahead of OffChart NXT, the Port Harcourt conference built on the decade-long legacy of #StartupSouth, and it's structured to do more than hand out a pitch trophy: readiness coaching, public visibility, and curated introductions to investors and partners, alongside a ₦30 million prize pool.

Here's exactly who qualifies, what the process looks like, and how to apply — pulled directly from the Challenge's own published rules and FAQ.

Who Can Apply

The Challenge is open to startups building valuable businesses across Africa — this is not a Nigeria-only or Port Harcourt-only programme. There's no sector restriction, no age cap on the company, and no requirement to already have outside funding. What matters is evidence of real progress. Any innovative, promising startup that can show that progress is free to apply.

Eligible founders fall into one of two tracks:

  • Early Traction — you've launched, and you have early evidence the market wants what you've built. That could be customers, users, transactions, contracts, partnerships, early revenue, or another credible form of validation.
  • Early Growth — you already have meaningful commercial traction and are actively scaling: customers, revenue, markets, team, or operations.

There's no pitch deck required at the point of application. The first step is simply about understanding your company, its stage, and its traction — the deck and sharper numbers come later, after the readiness programme.

The One Hard Requirement: A Founder Ticket

The single non-negotiable eligibility gate is a valid OffChart NXT Founder Ticket. There's no separate fee to enter the Challenge itself, but without a Founder Ticket, an application can't be processed. Buying the ticket doesn't guarantee a pitch slot or a prize — it simply opens the door to apply and be considered.

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Get your Founder Ticket. Head to offchartnxt.startupsouth.org and register. This is the eligibility requirement for everything that follows.
  2. Submit your Startup Challenge application. Complete the application at bit.ly/ocnxt-pitch and verify your Founder Ticket. You'll be asked about your company, its stage, and its traction — not a pitch deck.
  3. Enter the Pre-DealRoom Programme. There's no competitive screening at this stage. Once your application is complete and your ticket is verified, you're automatically onboarded into a readiness programme built to sharpen your business clarity, traction narrative, numbers, and pitch.
  4. Submit your final materials. After the programme, you submit the materials that are actually used to assess Top 50 selection — this is where the competitive evaluation happens, not at the initial application.
  5. Wait for the Top 50 announcement. Selected startups are publicly unveiled and enter the Community Prize campaign — a separate, public-voting track any Top 50 startup can win regardless of how far it goes in pitch judging.
  6. Take the Startup Stage, if selected. Qualifying founders pitch live at OffChart NXT in Port Harcourt on 22–23 October 2026.
  7. Reach the Final 10. Five Early Traction and five Early Growth companies advance to the flagship final and curated DealRoom conversations with investors, lenders, banks, corporates, grantmakers, accelerators, and strategic partners.

Applications close 31 August 2026. Early application is worth doing simply so your ticket can be verified and you can start the Pre-DealRoom Programme without delay.

What the ₦30M Prize Pool Actually Looks Like

Category Prize
Early Growth Winner ₦10,000,000
Early Traction Winner ₦5,000,000
Early Growth Finalist (x2) ₦3,000,000 each
Early Traction Finalist (x2) ₦3,000,000 each
Community Prize ₦2,000,000
HealthTech Award ₦1,000,000

Worth noting: this is a pool being mobilised with partners, and Startup South is upfront about that — awards remain subject to the final Challenge Rules and confirmed prize commitments. It isn't a fund already sitting closed in an account.

Who's Behind It

OffChart NXT carries the institutional weight of a decade-old regional ecosystem effort. Organisations connected to the event and its broader network include Meta, Google Developers Group, Airtel, Zoho Africa, the British Council, the Ford Foundation, MainOne, Sterling, NITDA, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government, SSEAN, ABAN, the Bank of Industry, UNDP, and the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, among others. That's the kind of room the DealRoom stage is built to put founders in front of.

What This Isn't

Read the Challenge's own FAQ closely and a consistent, honest thread runs through it: a Founder Ticket doesn't guarantee a pitch slot, a Top 50 spot doesn't guarantee a Final 10 place, and reaching the DealRoom doesn't guarantee investment, financing, or a commercial deal. Startup South is explicit that there are no guaranteed deals — only the value of being prepared, visible, and in the right room. Apply because your business is ready to be tested and sharpened in front of the right people, not because it's a shortcut to raising capital.
