Startup South Pledges ₦30 Million for Startup Challenge Ahead of OffChart NXT 2026

Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Startup South, the ecosystem-building organisation behind a decade of #StartupSouth conferences in Nigeria's South-South and South-East regions, has pledged a ₦30 million prize pool for its OffChart NXT Startup Challenge, a founder competition running ahead of the flagship OffChart NXT conference in Port Harcourt on 22–23 October 2026.

The Startup Challenge is open to Early Traction and Early Growth startups building "valuable businesses across Africa," and applications close 31 August 2026.

The Prize Architecture

The ₦30 million Startup Challenge prize pool is split across eight award categories rather than a single winner-takes-all purse:

Category Prize
Early Growth Winner ₦10,000,000
Early Traction Winner ₦5,000,000
Early Growth Finalist (x2) ₦3,000,000 each
Early Traction Finalist (x2) ₦3,000,000 each
Community Prize ₦2,000,000
HealthTech Award ₦1,000,000

Organisers have been explicit that the figure is a target being assembled with partners, not a fund already sitting fully committed in an account. The Challenge's own FAQ states that "prize awards remain subject to the final Challenge Rules and confirmed prize commitments," and the site carries a standing disclosure that the pool "is being mobilised with partners." That is a materially different claim from a closed fund, and worth understanding before founders build financial plans around it.

More Than a Cheque

Startup South is positioning the money as one output of a longer founder pipeline, not the whole point. Applicants who submit a complete entry and hold a verified Founder Ticket enter a "Pre-DealRoom Programme" designed to sharpen their traction narrative, numbers, and pitch. From there, the strongest 50 startups are publicly announced, a subset advances to a live Startup Stage pitch at the October conference, and five Early Traction plus five Early Growth companies reach a "Final 10" that feeds into curated DealRoom conversations with investors, lenders, banks, corporates, and grantmakers.

The organisation is careful to separate access from outcome: reaching the DealRoom does not guarantee investment, and Startup South says as much directly in its FAQ.

A Community Prize of ₦2 million runs as a separate, public-voting track that any startup in the Top 50 can win, independent of how far it advances in the pitch judging. A dedicated ₦1 million HealthTech Award sits alongside the two flagship categories.

Why This Matters for Southern Nigeria's Startup Corridor

Startup South, founded and convened by Uche Aniche, has spent a decade arguing that Nigeria's innovation story has been written almost entirely from Lagos. #StartupSouth — now evolving into OffChart NXT — has run annually since 2015 across cities including Port Harcourt, Enugu, Owerri, and Uyo, building what the organisation now measures as a regional ecosystem of over 300 companies.

By its own account, the broader Startup South network has helped catalyse more than $10 million in disclosed startup funding since inception, including over $500,000 deployed directly through its South-South-East Angel Network. The ₦30 million Startup Challenge sits inside that same mission — with the notable shift that this is Startup South itself structuring and fronting a prize pool, rather than only pointing founders toward outside capital.

Eligibility and How to Apply

The Challenge is open to two founder categories:

  • Early Traction — startups with initial evidence the market wants what they've built: customers, users, transactions, contracts, partnerships, or early revenue.
  • Early Growth — startups already scaling meaningfully across customers, revenue, markets, team, or operations.

A valid Founder Ticket to OffChart NXT is a hard eligibility requirement; there is no separate application fee, but participation without a ticket isn't possible. No pitch deck is required at the initial application stage — that comes later, after the Pre-DealRoom Programme, when founders submit the materials used for Top 50 assessment.

Here is the process end to end:

  1. Get a Founder Ticket. Register at offchartnxt.startupsouth.org — ticket purchase is the eligibility gate for the Startup Challenge.
  2. Submit the Startup Challenge application. Complete the application form at bit.ly/ocnxt-pitch and verify your Founder Ticket. This first step asks about your company, stage, and traction — not a pitch deck.
  3. Enter the Pre-DealRoom Programme. Once your application and ticket are verified, you're onboarded into the readiness programme that helps sharpen your traction narrative, numbers, and pitch ahead of final submission.
  4. Submit your final materials. After the programme, you submit the materials used for Top 50 assessment.
  5. Wait for the Top 50 announcement. Selected startups are publicly unveiled and enter the Community Prize campaign.
  6. Pitch at OffChart NXT, if selected. Qualifying startups take the Startup Stage in Port Harcourt; five Early Traction and five Early Growth companies advance to the Final 10 and curated DealRoom conversations.

Applications close 31 August 2026. Founders can register for a ticket and start the process directly at offchartnxt.startupsouth.org.

What This Doesn't Promise

Startup South's own materials are unusually direct about the limits of the opportunity: the prize pool is still being assembled with partners rather than fully banked, Top 50 selection and Final 10 advancement are not guaranteed by ticket purchase alone, and neither the Challenge nor the DealRoom can guarantee investment or commercial deals. Founders weighing whether to apply should read that as an invitation to build a strong application — not as confirmation of funding.
