5 Startup and Business Challenges Open Across Southern Nigeria This August and September

Southern Nigeria's founder calendar is unusually full this stretch of the year. Between the last week of August and the first two weeks of September 2026, five distinct pitch and business challenges are running across the region — from a ₦30 million prize pool in Port Harcourt to a global investor stage in Lagos. Together, they cut across the South-West, South-South, and South-East, and across everything from early-stage climate ventures to scaling tech companies.

We verified each of the following directly against its organiser's own published information — not aggregator lists. Two additional programmes we initially considered didn't hold up under that standard: one closed in March, the other doesn't typically run until October. Both are left off this list. What follows are the five that are real, current, and worth a founder's time.

1. OffChart NXT Startup Challenge — Port Harcourt

The flagship of the season. Startup South, the organisation behind a decade of #StartupSouth conferences across Nigeria's south, has structured a ₦30 million prize pool around its OffChart NXT Startup Challenge — split across Early Traction and Early Growth categories, a Community Prize, and a dedicated HealthTech award. The Challenge is open to startups building valuable businesses anywhere in Africa, not just Nigeria, and runs through a Pre-DealRoom readiness programme before founders reach the pitch stage in Port Harcourt on 22–23 October 2026.

  • Where: Port Harcourt, Rivers State
  • Prize: ₦30 million across eight award categories
  • Deadline: 31 August 2026
  • Eligibility: Early Traction or Early Growth startups, Africa-wide

2. GITEX Nigeria Startup Festival — Supernova Challenge, Lagos

Running alongside GITEX Nigeria's second edition, the Startup Festival puts more than 1,000 curated startups in front of 300-plus investors managing a combined $4 trillion in assets. Its centerpiece is the Supernova Challenge, GITEX's global pitch competition, giving Southern Nigerian founders a rare shot at an internationally connected investor room without leaving Lagos.

  • Where: Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos
  • Dates: 31 August – 3 September 2026
  • What's on offer: Pitch access to 300+ investors, global Supernova Challenge track, direct exposure to buyers and enterprise partners
  • Eligibility: Tech-based startups, sector-agnostic

3. iDICE Startup Bridge Growth Lab — Bank of Industry

Run by the Bank of Industry under the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) programme, the Startup Bridge Growth Lab offers up to $350,000 per startup to twelve early-stage companies selected across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones — including the South-West, South-South, and South-East. Applications for this round closed 19 August 2026, just before this piece published, but the programme runs in recurring rounds and is worth tracking closely for founders who want to be ready for the next call.

  • Where: Nationwide, across all six geopolitical zones
  • Funding: Up to $350,000 per startup, 12 slots
  • Status: This round closed 19 August 2026 — recurring programme, watch for the next call
  • Eligibility: Early-stage digital and creative economy startups

4. MTN-WWF Africa PachiPanda Challenge

A climate-focused pitch competition backed by MTN and WWF Africa, open to startups building innovative solutions in climate resilience, sustainability, or environmental impact. It's nationwide rather than Southern-Nigeria-specific, but it's actively promoted right now and open to founders across all Southern states.

  • Where: Nationwide (open to Southern Nigerian founders)
  • Prize: $5,000 plus mentorship and growth support
  • Focus: Climate innovation
  • Note: Actively open as of August 2026 — confirm the exact closing date directly with the organisers before submitting, as it wasn't published at time of writing

5. Niger Delta Digital Summit — Startup Pitch Track

An annual fixture of the Niger Delta's tech calendar, the Digital Summit's pitch track awards ₦1.8 million split among its top three startups, spanning fintech, agritech, health-tech, edtech, e-commerce, and green-tech. It's one of the few pitch competitions built specifically around South-South founders rather than a national or pan-African pool.

  • Where: Niger Delta region
  • Prize: ₦1.8 million, split among top 3
  • Focus: Fintech, agritech, health-tech, edtech, e-commerce, green-tech
  • Note: Confirm the current 2026 date window directly with organisers — this is a recurring annual event

What Didn't Make the List, and Why

Two programmes came close but didn't meet the bar for "open right now in Southern Nigeria this August or September":

  • South East Pitch Competition (SEVCP) — a real, recurring programme for South-East startups, but its 2026 deadline was 27 March, months before this window.
  • NESG Startup Pitch Competition — genuinely tied to Southern Nigerian founders through Sterling Bank and Venture Garden, but it typically runs alongside the Nigerian Economic Summit in October, outside this month's window.

Both are worth bookmarking for later in the year.

For the full breakdown of eligibility, prize structure, and a step-by-step application walkthrough for the largest of these, see Siiqo's earlier coverage: Startup South Pledges ₦30M for Startup Challenge at OffChart NXT and How to Apply for the OffChart NXT Startup Challenge 2026. Whichever of these you're preparing for, the fundamentals judges and investors look for are the same: real customers, real transaction history, and a business that can show its numbers, not just describe them. If you're building that record from scratch, a storefront on Siiqo gives your business a live, verifiable presence — product catalogue, order history, and payments — that can back up exactly the kind of traction story these challenges are asking founders to tell.

This list reflects information verified directly from each programme's own published sources as of 23 August 2026. Deadlines and prize details are subject to change — confirm current details with each organiser before applying.
